Cheng has received Glimmertrain's Family Matter's Award for his short story, "The Boy," which appears in Glimmertrain's August 2009 issue.

Cheng is currently a part of the National Book Foundation's BookUpNYC program. BookUpNYC is a new program designed to motivate young people to stay involved with books and reading for pleasure throughout their middle school years, with the hope they will develop into lifelong readers. The program will introduce activities that emphasize reading as both fun and interactive.
